20. Cedric

The lieutenant left Kourtnee standing in the waiting room as he exited from the glass door to the hallway. The door closed behind him, and the lock engaged with a *click*. She felt frightened by his ominous words but was utterly trapped between two locked doors. Lieutenant Roberts practically skipped towards the loading area and out of sight.

The fact that he’d left her uncuffed and unsupervised showed how little he regarded Kourtnee as a threat. She knew he was right, of course, as the other women weren’t willing to help her, and she didn’t have the capabilities to escape.

She figured that dealing with the perverted jail staff was no longer the right play. If she really wanted to get out of here, she’d have to try and convince whoever the lieutenant’s ‘associate’ was.

Kourtnee turned around and found Mildred’s smokey eyes.

Kourtnee clenched her eyes shut and winced in pain. Her head was suddenly pounding! That name! That was the distant name she’d forgotten! That name was echoing in the back of her brain!
